Thank you for this comprehensive work! Apart from the graph above, the tables and spreadsheet linked, would you happen to have a published list of the fics, you have based your study on? Some of them sound really amusing, and going though a compiled list would be considerably simpler than flexing Google at FimFiction
So the measure of lesbianism is how many mares you've been in a relationship with? Somepony that's dated a hundred stallions but experiment with mares twice is a bigger lesbian than somepony that's in a life-long monogamous relationship with one mare?
That's exactly what I'm saying. After all, this is fan fiction we're talking. She's never actually dated in the show; After all, it's a kids show. If we pool in all the shipping of same sex RD, then she'd have been married to many different mares for many different life times.
I would be shocked if this wasn't brought up yet, but it's worth noting that the extremely skewed ratio of female characters to male characters (Screen time, number of characters, etc) in the Equestrian society is very likely to be influencing the ratios for gender in these ships. Couldn't help but notice that the 'rainbow pride' (same sex ship percentage) awards on the text version of this listed all female characters, but the 'as a rule' (opposite gender ship percentage) list was predominately male in a world dominated by females. More options for potential opposite sex pairings for males and fewer opposite sex options for females would influence the shipping rates for same/opposite sex pairings. Also, often the females on the 'as a rule' list would typically have a 'obvious' opposite sex pairing (i.e. they are married or the show supports a pairing with an opposite sex partner in some other manner.) The population demographic in the world of Equestira is likely influencing these results heavily.
Overall, awesome work. I'd like to see a measure of Effect Size for this fandom compared to another that has a more typical diversity of characters with respect to gender and screen time to put the results into perspective. Not well versed in other fandoms myself, but if a good example comes up and you'd like to see this done, let me know. I would relish the opportunity to practice my statistics haha. Great work on this, keep it up!
This is definitely true, the large numbers of female characters skew the numbers. Especially when you consider that the main cast and big secondary characters are all female, most ships are automatically going to be lesbian and those who wish for straight shipping have a limited male selection. Maybe I should have written about that in an "analysis" section or something.
You mean you want to analyse how the gender composition and size of a cast influences orientation and diversity of shipping in fanfiction? That does sound interesting, I admit. I would have to find other sites that catalogue stories for that fandom the same way fimfiction does for mlp, though. It's hard to get an overview of a story on fanfiction.net.
why theres no ScootaBelle?its pretty popular, and no SpikeBloom I almost cried. also weird ships goes with Lily and Gilda, its so weird.no any Gilda ships?or I cant just see them.you would also made a one with ocs.popular oc ships.xd
enlarge it. if you look close, you can see really fine lines connecting to many more ponies than you could have seen otherwise. scootabelle is there, as is spikebloom. gilda, too, has quite a few ships.
i barely noticed them at all, but then i wondered why there were some dots that didnt appear to be connected to anything. if there were no ships for a character, why would they get a dot on the chart? i then proceeded to get ocd over it. so...yeah. if you look hard enough, as they say, you will eventually find what youre looking for. if it helped you at all, or if it even mattered, glad it did!
Sorry, no. That would have taken me about ten times longer, and I already spent several weeks collecting data as it is. Would be a good thing to have, though. If you're looking for a specific ship I recommend browsing fimfiction and filtering "romance" and your two characters, or searching for the names if the characters don't have tags.
You know I think this is why this fandom is so vast and diverse. Its because the bronies out there have free rein ( excuse the pun ) to make whatever they want. to play with whatever idea comes to mind whether its in art; music; or shipping. And if they do give twilight a boyfriend in season four he better be fucking perfect. Only the very best for Princess Sparkle.
The top 5 ships don't surprise me at all its these tiny little ships I find hilarious. Who the hay is Colton Vines and why is he so madly in love with Daisy? Not to mention the budding romance of Lickety split and who ever Rumble is. And then there is always Shoe Shine and Thunderlane. Hoops and Score? Hoity Toity and Photo Finish is just logic though, that's clearly canon.
Manually. As in, I browsed fimfiction sorting by the "romance" tag, and looked at every story, trying to determine what characters were being shipped. I can't think of any script that could do better than me, since often the ship is only shown in the picture or written in the description.
